Main title (unregistered) Written and performed by Ramin Djawadi. Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t watched GoT yet, but now that it’s over, you’re considering a marathon. In this case, the consensus is correct, namely: Seasons 1-6: Excellent. Deep world-building, clever dialogue, Hollywood-worthy epic scenes, masterful acting, detailed plotting, real surprises, a great, sparingly used soundtrack.
There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterization and soap opera drama
GoT is definitely worth watching during these times of the year. Season 7: Suddenly you notice that the quality of the script and plot has dropped dramatically. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it gets a pass. Season 8: This fall descends into an abyss you never thought possible.
Terrible for fiction
The script has become so amateurish that the still great production values are no longer enough to preserve it. If you’ve ever enjoyed Lost but were shocked by how bad the last season was, then you’re in familiar territory. The biggest problem with the last season was that it took us away from the story and forced us to think about it’s many weaknesses. We lost our disbelief.
But it’s not the best series ever
It also ruined the arcs of the series to the point where rewatching the entire series is pointless. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for beginners? Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the disappointment afterwards. It could be, but dropping the ball on the last episode leaves it behind the next better series that deserve more of a marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons, plus the movie) Breaking Bad
