The action takes place in the 23rd century on Mars. The plot tells the story of a murder investigation led by a pair formed by private detective Aline Ruby and her android Carlos Rivera. First feature film by director Jérémie Périn. He had already directed episodes of the television series Lastman (2016). In 2018, producer Didier Creste contacted him and Laurent Sarfati, creator and screenwriter of Lastman, to work on a film adaptation of their series. Instead, they convinced him to produce an original idea, a neo-noir science fiction animated film, for which he managed to find financing and which eventually became Mars Express. I was not prepared for the level of attention to detail and plot in this adult animated sci-fi thriller. The three laws of robotics, which are included in Asimov’s Robots series of novels, are even used by the writers to explain the behavior and interactions of robots with humans. There are many things to like about this film, although it may not be a genre-bending film. Let’s start with the exquisite animation style, which is incredibly colorful, fluid, and detailed. I thought Carlos was one of the best written and best designed characters. A lot of attention was paid to creating the futuristic environment, down to the smallest elements that give the film realism. However, everything happens very quickly, and several significant personalities or events are simply left out. “Mars Express” needed a bit more screen time to develop these elements better, but the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival usually does not like overly long animations, and this 2023 film was one of them! Overall, this was a great animated film that is worth watching!
